UNIVERSITY BOOKSHOP

DEVON

LOCATION

The Bookshop is ideally located just inside the main entrance of the college, giving it a high profile with students, staff and all visitors to this university-affiliated college. The campus is situated on the city outskirts, with excellent links to the centre, which has all the top class facilities one would expect in a major modern city.

DESCRIPTION

This thriving Bookshop has been expanded and improved over the last year by the present owners. There is now a wide range of relevant stock, clearly and appealingly displayed, and a strong commitment to excellent customer service. The owners have worked on increasing the profile of the shop with staff, students and visitors, resulting in a steadily rising turnover and profit.  The newly computerised system means that stocktaking is simplified, and that ordering and returning of stock from any supplier is easy using a BACS-linked central database. Stock includes textbooks and revision guides in all relevant subjects as well as children’s books for student teachers. There is alsoa large market for medical text-books. The owners have been in advanced discussions concerning this market, and would expect to see a significant increase in turnover as these links continue to develop.

Book orders are normally collected, but can be delivered next day if required by the customer, thanks to a next-day contract with the carriers ANC. An area for expansion is the newly set up website, which can be developed for mail order if required.

Stock other than books includes stationery, cards, and useful gadgets such as USB pen drives for computer users, together with the very popular specially-printed academic year diaries and teachers’ planners. The Bookshop has a policy of stocking 50% recycled stationery where possible, and also sells Fair Trade gifts. It is easily run by one person for most of the time, with help needed during the busiest period at the beginning of the new academic year.

FIXTURES, FITTINGS AND EQUIPMENT

Shelving is fitted around all the walls, with 1 large and 2 smaller central wooden display gondolas. An adjustable table unit allows for flexible display of books at sale time or at the beginning of the year. The counter has an electronic till, new computer, new printer and fax machine, with the area behind it being the office area, including shelving and office filing space.

PRICE - £ 49,000 for the goodwill, fixtures, fittings and equipment and the leasehold interest. (SAV)

AGENTS COMMENTS

A very rare opportunity to take on a thriving bookshop unopposed in its ideal location within an expanding university college. There is a continuing expanding market for the shop to tap in to and take advantage of. Available only because the owners are reluctantly moving for family reasons, this shop is expected to generate a lot of interest and not remain on the market for long.

All purchase prices are plus Stock at Valuation (SAV) if appropriate.
